When you think of a screw cap wine, do you assume that it is a wine of inferior quality? Some people do think that because of the stigma that screw cap wines were once called, “hobo wines,” because of the correlation with other products using screw caps at the time. But here’s the thing, around 30% of the wine bottles on the market are finished with screw caps and 100% of wine from New Zealand uses screw caps. Many of these are premium offerings. Screw caps are an important factor in the preservation of wine. Screw caps cannot taint a wine while a natural cork has that potential. Choosing how to finish a bottle of wine is a decision many winemakers make for a purpose, and not just at random. Screw caps are more affordable, they help keep prices low for the buyers, and well….they are easy to open. But most importantly, for the first years, they can age wine just as well as wines with corks! What are your thoughts on screw caps?
