Chardonnay, 2016. 1790 // February 2019 Vintners Series WOMC

Winetasting with Paul Kalemkiarian & Ed Masciana

Chardonnay, 2016. 1790
Appellation: Arroyo Seco, California

Arroyo Seco translates to "dry riverbed," which is nothing short of a perfect place to grow grapes. Millions of years ago, this area was under water. As the river receded, it left tons of sea matter, shells and the like in its wake. The nutrients in this matter mixed with the rocky subsurface to create the ideal soil to plant vines. Add to that soil the cool, ocean-influenced climate of Monterey, and the conditions can't get much better... Our selection takes advantage of all the positives. Half of the wine is barrel fermented, and the other half is fermented in stainless steel. This allows for a touch of oak but doesn't permit it to overtake the wine.
